| To rediscover the romance and beauty of the Highlands. |
|
Coul House Hotel is the perfect place to base oneself to rediscover the romance and beauty of the Highlands, certainly a destination where one should plan on staying for more than just a couple of nights.
The ancient Mackenzies of Coul picked the supreme setting for this secluded country mansion, with its magnificent uninterrupted views over forest and mountain. This is a family-run hotel offering high standards of personal service with a warm highland welcome. The bedrooms are individually-styled, comfortable and well-equipped.
Coul House is a category A listed building, meaning that it is historically significant architecturally. Glance at any of the ground floor ceilings and you will see why; with ornate plasterwork and fine craftsmanship the house is truly unique.
The handsome gabled mansion of unusual plan is centred on two octagons with a demi-octagonal porch. The 'lying-pane' (horizontal) window glazing must be one of the earliest examples of this Scottish fashion in the Highlands. The central octagonal parlour is flanked by dining and drawing rooms, all with ornate plaster ceilings.
Some of the building stone came from Cullicudden on the Black Isle, and was transported up the Dingwall canal and then by road to Coul; brick came from Brora, Sutherland, and slate from Easdale, Argyll.
Dining at Coul House is a real experience. The octagonal dining room has a 18 foot ceiling, a fire place and three ceiling to floor windows with fabulous views of the Strathconon Valley and the mountains beyond. |

The hotel is approximately 20 miles from Inverness. Brodie Castle is located 4.5 miles west of Forres and 24 miles east of Inverness on the east coast of Scotland.
Having been badly damaged by fire in 1645, the castle was later rebuilt. The lime-harled building is a typical Z plan tower house with ornate corbelled battlements and bartizans. If you know where to look, you can see cannon drain spouts and a sun dial built into the side of the keep.
Today you can visit in the interior with its unusual plaster ceilings and see French furniture, paintings, European and Chinese porcelain, Japanese artefacts, toys and much, much more. There are many rooms open to visit on several floors so you need to allow a good hour to look around everything. If you are interested in furnished interiors (as opposed to old castle ruins) then you will certainly enjoy your visit. At the end of your tour, don't forget to carry on through the tea room to the old kitchen and then when you exit the gift shop, the old dairy is outside to your left.
There's also a picnic area, tea room and gift shop, adventure playground with timber fort for the kids, woodland walks, gardens and a lake. If you have chance to visit during the Spring, the famous collection of daffodils will be in full bloom.
Romantic, rugged, austere yet welcoming, no single phrase can take in all of these great tracts of unspoilt land, because within the Highlands there is simply so much variety.
Which Highlands will you choose? The mountain slopes of Lochaber, lorded over by the mighty Ben Nevis near Fort William, are different in atmosphere from, say, the long reaches of the Caithness flow country, with its interlacing tiny lochans and open moorland stretches. Different again, are the jagged ridges of the Cuillins of Skye, or the reddish granites of the Cairngorms overlooking the ancient pine forests of Strathspey. From the mossy oakwoods on the road to Ardnamurchan to the sandy shores of Nairn or Dornoch, the Highlands offer countless scenic experiences. To the City of Inverness and the bustling town of Fort William. |
