| Sixteenth-century property in Riga’s city centre.. |
|
In 1435 the first guest house for travellers was opened on Skārņu street in Riga. It was built on the foundations of the Castle of the Order of the Brotherhood of Swordsmen and retains the long corridor plan characteristic of a cloister with small rooms known as cells.
In expanding the building at the end of the 16th century, the City's Burgomaster Nikolauss Eke, who was accused by the residents of Riga of lining his own pocket with funds from the City Treasury, had apparently decided to polish up his image by opening a sanctuary for the widows of Guild's craftsmen here.
Since the summer of 2005 the house is once more operating as a guest house – "Ekes Konvents" which has been scrupulously restored by experts specialising in Latvia's historic architecture. |

Ekes Konvents is located on the Skārņu street in Riga’s city centre. Skārņu street is one of the oldest streets in Rīga. Once upon a time, it was the foundation for the Castle of The Order of the Brotherhood of Swordsmen. St. Peter’s Church is mentioned in articles as early as 1209, eight years after the founding of Riga.
The churches of St. George and St.John are also located right next door. Judging by the name of the street, it was once the home of a number of butchers’ shops, however, the passage of time has seen it transformed into the home of friendly pubs, tiny shops, museums and galleries.
Approximate driving time from Riga Airport (RIX) to Ekes Konvents is 20 minutes and distance is 20 kilometres (12 miles).
Getting around: The city centre and old town can be comfortably explored on foot. Riga is well served by an efficient public transport system of trams, buses, and trolleybuses; some routes also offer night services. Train services to destinations throughout the country run from the central train station. |
